In the wake of Stephen Sondheim’s criticism of the Broadway-bound Porgy and Bess, the American Repertory Theatre in Boston has released a video feature in which the stars and creators express their feelings about the operatic musical classic. Norm Lewis and Audra McDonald talk about their respect for the show, with four-time Tony winner McDonald noting that she finally feels she’s the right age to play Bess. Click on for a snippet of Grier’s performance of “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” plus comments by the actors, director Diane Paulus and writer Suzan-Lori Parks. Porgy and Bess is currently playing at ART and is due to begin performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on December 17.
