D.C. controller asleep while flight from Chicago lands
Federal aviation officials are reviewing air traffic controller staffing at airports around the country after two airliners landed at Reagan National Airport without clearance from the airport tower because they were unable to raise anyone there. One of them was a United flight from Chicago.
Whittier library dispute flares up again
The heated debate over Whittier Elementary School's library continued Wednesday when community members accused Chicago Public Schools officials of reneging on a promise to install a library in the school's dilapidated field house.
Spider-Man's T.V. Carpio Sidelined After Onstage Injury
Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark star T.V. Carpio is out of the Broadway production for two weeks due to an unspecified onstage injury. Carpio's understudy, America Olivo, will take over the role of Arachne until Carpio's return at a still unannounced date.
"T.V. Carpio sustained an injury on Wednesday, March 16, during an onstage battle scene with a fellow actor," a spokesmen for the production said in a statement. "On doctor's orders, she will be out of the show for the next two weeks."
Featuring music by U2's Bono and The Edge, Spider-Man is currently in previews at the Foxwoods Theatre under the supervision of new director Philip William McKinley. The show will go on hiatus beginning April 17 with performances resuming May 1. Opening night is now scheduled for June 14. The production also stars Reeve Carney as Peter Parker, Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson and Patrick Page as Norman Osborn.
Olivia Williams on Battling Matthew Fox in the London Debut of LaBute's In a Forest, Dark and Deep
London-born Olivia Williams made a Hollywood splash in Rushmore, The Sixth Sense and, more recently, as Carey Mulligan’s teacher in An Education, but the Cambridge University graduate has rarely been long absent from the London stage. Now she is making her West End debut, playing the sister to American TV star Matthew Fox (Lost) in the world premiere of In a Forest, Dark and Deep, Neil LaBute’s revelation-laden drama of sibling rivalry (running through June 4 at the Vaudeville Theatre). The winning Williams took time during the two-hander's opening week to talk to Broadway.com about LaBute-ian misogyny, acting American and guiding stage neophyte Fox into the land of London theater.

The exciting thing about doing a world premiere is that the writer—and in this case the writer-director [Neil LaBute]—is tinkering with the text [during rehearsal], and that can be very intense. Four-Time Tony Winner Audra McDonald Eyes Return to Broadway in Porgy and Bess
Four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, who recently left TV’s Private Practice and confirmed her involvement with the upcoming production of Porgy and Bess at the American Repertory Theater, told Broadway.com she is eyeing a return to Broadway in the role of Bess. “It could end up on Broadway,” McDonald said about the Diane Paulus-helmed production in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “We’ll see.”
The new production is a re-imagining of George and Ira Gershwin’s classic opera by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and composer Diedre Murray. The show is scheduled to debut in September 2011 at A.R.T., where Paulus serves as artistic director. No other casting has been revealed.
Porgy and Bess, which features music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward based on Porgy by Heyward and his wife Dorothy, includes such classics as "Summertime," "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," "I Got Plenty o' Nothin" and "It Ain't Necessarily So." Originally conceived as an American folk opera, it tells the story of Porgy, who lives in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina, and his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of Crown, her pimp, and Sportin' Life, a drug ...
Sun-Times investors elect successor to James Tyree
The investors in Sun-Times Media Holdings, parent of the Chicago Sun-Times and other area daily and weekly newspapers and their websites, elected Jeremy Halbreich successor to the late James Tyree as chairman, it was announced today.
