A Broadway musical built around the career of 21-time Tony Award winner Harold Prince is in the works. Titled Prince of Broadway, the show is eyeing a Toronto production in the summer of 2012, with a Broadway run to follow, co-directed by Prince and Susan Stroman.
Prince told The New York Times that the show will include about 40 songs from his best-known musicals over the past six decades. His directing credits include the original productions of Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, The Phantom of the Opera, She Loves Me, Company, Follies, Candide, Pacific Overtures, Evita, Parade, LoveMusik and Paradise Found. Before becoming a director, he produced The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello! and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
“It’s bound to be like a revue, but we also have thoughts about a real subtext for the whole piece,” Prince said, explaining that the show (featuring a script by Scottsboro Boys librettist David Thompson) will likely have a cast of 12.
