'Go Rent!' Original Star Jesse L. Martin on the Musical's Return to the New York Stage

Rent, the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical by Jonathan Larson, is officially headed back to the New York stage. The production, which is being helmed by original Rent director Michael Greif, set dates this summer at off-Broadway’s New World Stages. Broadway.com asked Jesse L. Martin, who played Tom Collins in the original company as well as the movie adaptation, about the musical’s return to the boards.

"I think it’s amazing! I want Rent to last forever,” Martin exclaimed and then added, “I’m a little shocked, to be honest, that’s it going to be back so soon, and that Michael Greif is directing it again. But if anybody can do it, he can. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s retold."

Martin noted that the world has changed since Rent’s premiere at off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop on January 26, 1996 (it moved to Broadway in April of that year). "It’s definitely a period piece now," the actor, who just landed a new TV pilot, told Broadway.com, "but the music is timeless and absolutely beautiful. I think it’s going to stick around for a really, really long time ...

Will The King's Speech Director Tom Hooper Bring Les Miserables to the Big Screen?

Fresh off scoring an Oscar nomination for The King's Speech, director Tom Hooper may be interested in adapting the Tony-winning musical Les Miserables for the big screen, according to the Los Angeles Times. A rep for Hooper would not comment on his involvement with the project.

The previously announced project is being produced by Working Title films and producer Cameron Mackintosh. No casting has been announced, but production is expected to begin later this year or in 2012.

Featuring music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, a book by Schonberg and Alain Boubil and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, Les Miserables made its stage debut in London in 1985. Two years later, it took the Broadway stage in March 1987. It played for 6,680 performances before closing in 2003. A revival followed in October 2006, playing 463 performances before closing in 2008.

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, the story of reformed 19th century Frenchman Jean Valjean and his struggle against police officer Javert during the background of France's student revolution, was adapted into a non-musical version for screen in 1998, starring Liam Neeson as Valjean, Tony winner and The King's Speech star Geoffrey Rush as pursuer Javert, Claire ...

Behind the 'Absolute Madness' of War Horse's Amazing Life-Size Puppets

When director Marianne Elliott was pitched the idea of creating a theater piece based on a children’s book about cavalry horses in World War I, she responded, “It sounds like absolute madness. Yes, I’d love to do it.” Along with co-director Tom Morris and the artists of South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, Elliott guided War Horse to a widely hailed London debut, and the creators are now hard at work bringing the show’s lead character, a beloved horse named Joey, to life for the American premiere of War Horse at Lincoln Center Theater beginning March 15.

At a February 24 press preview, held in a rehearsal room beneath the Vivian Beaumont Theater, Handspring co-founder Basil Jones, a native of South Africa, quipped, “A puppet is an engineer of the emotions, using up-to-the-minute 17th-century technology.” But don’t be fooled: These horses are amazingly lifelike despite being crafted of lightweight cane, aluminum, leather and mesh. A team of three puppeteers—described as the horse’s head, heart and hind—control Joey’s intricate movements and provide his "voice" in scenes choreographed by Toby Sedgwick.

“Movement is thought,” Jones explains of the horse puppet, emphasizing the importance of ...

Omnivorous: Dry No More

Evanston's Few Spirits is just one of several regional craft distilleries setting up shop.

Off-Broadway?s A Perfect Future to Retire Early

The end is in sight for the world premiere of David Hay’s A Perfect Future, which will play its final performance at off-Broadway’s Cherry Lane Theatre on March 6. The open-ended engagement began previews on February 4 and officially opened on February 17, directed by Wilson Milam.

Like many good New York stories, A Perfect Future begins with a dinner party. Power couple John and Natalie are hosting, and the guest list includes Elliot, a friend from their college radical days, and Mark, a straight-laced young man from John's risk management firm. Over the course of the evening—and many bottles of wine—these four explosive personalities try and reconcile idealism with reality and turn their belief systems inside out.

A Perfect Future, which explores whether people can truly love each other and have opposing political views, stars Donna Bullock as Natalie, Scott Drummond as Mark, Daniel Oreskes as Elliot and Michael T. Weiss as John. For a video feature on the show, click here.

Beyonce Under Fire for Fela Tribute Photos in L?Officiel Paris

Pop diva Beyonce graces the pages of French publication L’Officiel Paris’ March issue, and the star is under fire for a photo paying tribute to the Nigerian pioneer of Afrobeat music—and subject of recent Broadway musical Fela!—Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. In the controversial photo, Beyonce wears an African-inspired dress designed by her mother, with the singer's skin artificially darkened and painted with a tribal design.

Beyonce’s connection to the story of Fela Kuti began well before this photo shoot: Her husband, rap mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, was a co-producer of Fela! on Broadway, along with Hollywood couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith. The show shuttered at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in January 2011 and went on to a sold out run at London’s National Theatre with original star Sahr Nguajah reprising the title role. The show uses Kuti’s pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), in a hybrid of concert, dance and musical theater, to explore his controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician.

The photo tribute has raised the hackles of some media world personalities, including Jezebel.com blogger Dodai Stewart. "It's one thing to ...

Omnivorous: Dry No More

Evanston's Few Spirits is just one of several regional craft distilleries setting up shop.
by Mike Sula
Even before it formally came into existence, Evanston was decreed dry when Northwestern University imposed a four-mile ban on the sale of alcohol around the college campus in 1855. And the city remained that way up to and during Prohibition, as well as long after it ended—the first legal drink wasn't sold there until 1972.…

Less than a week before the beginning of previews of the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, People.com has published photos of Daniel Radcliffe and his castmates in rehearsal. Burning Boy Scribe David West Read on Reliving His High School Nightmares at Roundabout Underground

About the Author:
David West Read already has an enviable educational pedigree, and the young playwright is quickly amassing a body of work to back it up. His NYU masters' thesis play Happy Face was part of the 2010 Pacific Playwrights Festival at South Coast Repertory and had a staged reading directed by Sam Gold (Circle Mirror Transformation). Another play, The Dream of the Burning Boy, in which the sudden death of a high school overachiever tortures the dreams of a doting teacher, was workshopped at the 2010 National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Now Read will get his first full New York production when Burning Boy bows at the Roundabout Underground on February 25. The talented young writer recently reflected on this milestone experience with Broadway.com, including why it’s worth reliving his own less-than-blissful high school days to see this story come to life.

I’ve been in and out of several educational institutions since graduating from high school almost a decade ago—the University of Toronto for my B.A., New York University for my M.F.A., and now the Playwrights Program at the Juilliard School—but still, it’s nightmares ...

Joey Curatolo on Fulfilling his Fab Four Fate as Paul McCartney in Rain

Age and hometown: "Late 40s." Brooklyn, NY

Current role: Charming three generations of Beatles fans in a Broadway debut performance as Paul McCartney in Rain.

No Place Like Home: For those who find the notion of destiny doubtful, the story of musician Joey Curatolo might just change minds. When his Beatles tribute show Rain opened at the Neil Simon Theatre on 52nd Street last fall, it was around the corner from where Curatolo stumbled on his career as a Paul McCartney doppelganger 30 years earlier. “I was working as a messenger in the city when I was 16, and I happened to go by SIR studios on 54th Street,” Curatolo remembers. “I heard 'Magical Mystery Tour' being played live, so I went in and someone said ‘Are you here for McCartney?’“I threw down the packages and said ‘Sure,’ and played for them. Within six weeks I was at the Pantages Theater in L.A. with the show Beatlemania.”

Playing Paul: After touring with Beatlemania, Curatolo joined Rain—“the first ever tribute band”—and set his sights on creating a pitch-perfect Paul. “I didn’t want to play him, I wanted to channel him,” the actor says. “It came pretty ...
