The Poetry Foundation's new digs

The Poetry Foundation is a not for profit organization dedicated to the promotion of poetry in contemporary culture. Its new home is comprised of a building in dialogue with a garden space that is created by erosion of an implied volume as determined by the property boundary of the L-shaped site, resulting in a relationship whereby the building pushes into the garden and vice-versa. ?Flyer from the Poetry Foundation, 61 W. Superior

The Fix

A building?s way harder than a poem
To make.
Once you start
You can?t just dump
The part that you got wrong.
Like words too soon in print,
Eyesores in glass and steel
Resist revision.?

This Week's Movie Action

I can't speak highly enough of Kaneto Shindo's The Naked Island (1960), which screens at 3 PM on Saturday and 6 PM on Wednesday at Gene Siskel Film Center. Shot in beautiful black-and-white widescreen that ought to be appreciated on the big screen, and staged with virtually no dialogue, it tells the poignant story of a little farming family trying to survive on a secluded island in the Seto Inland Sea.?

Stratford?s Jesus Christ Superstar Jumps to La Jolla & Eyes Broadway

The Des McAnuff-helmed production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, currently running at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, will be coming stateside with a transfer to the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego this fall. The musical, about the last days of Jesus’ life, replaces the previously scheduled Finding Neverland. The show will run from November 18 through December 31, 2011 and rumors of a Broadway transfer are already swirling.

Superstar will move to La Jolla with its full Stratford cast, which features Paul Nolan as Jesus, Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene and Josh Young as Judas, with Tony winner Brent Carver in the role of Pontius Pilate.

A move from California to Broadway would hardly be a first for McAnuff, who served as artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse from 1983 to 1994, and again from 2001 until 2007. The west coast theater served as a starting point for many Broadway hits, including Tony winners Jersey Boys, which McAnuff also directed, and Memphis. Whether or not Superstar will follow in those footsteps remains to be seen. “I’m not thinking that way,” McAnuff told the Toronto Star, “I’m more ...

Phantom Sequel Love Never Dies to Be Filmed

Musical theater titan Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies, a sequel to his West End and Broadway juggernaut The Phantom of the Opera, will be given everlasting life on film, according to the New York Times.

Love Never Dies continues the story of the Phantom, who has moved from his lair in the Paris Opera House to haunt the fairgrounds of Coney Island, far across the Atlantic. Set 10 years after the mysterious disappearance of the Phantom from Paris, the show is described as a rollercoaster ride of obsession and intrigue.

The musical, directed by Jack O’Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, had its world premiere at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre on February 22, 2010, starring Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo. That production was revised and re-reviewed, but is slated to close on August 27, 2011. An Australian production of the show, with a different creative team attached, opened to warm reviews at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne in May 2011. With Broadway plans uncertain, it will be the Australian production that will be filmed for distribution on DVD.

“I think that we’re all realistic," Lloyd Webber said of filming the show, "and I think ...

Avoiding the punk rock marathon: An interview with Keith Morris of Off!

I remember a long time ago reading an account of the old LA punk scene that said that when Keith Morris quit as the lead singer of Black Flag he basically took the band's sense of humor with him. Morris's pure not-giving-a-fuck attitude helped make the Circle Jerks one of the best bands of their era, and it's a big part of what's allowed him to continue being a punk idol decades after many of his contemporaries have faded into irrelevance.?

Two-time Tony winners Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy will soon lead the cast of Eugene O’Neill’s epic drama The Iceman Cometh at Chicago’s Goodman Theater. Lane will play the role of Theodore "Hickey" Hickman with Dennehy as Larry Slade. The classic play will run from April 22-June 12, 2012, directed by Goodman Artistic Director Robert Falls.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Falls said that "Nathan had approached me about wanting to work on an O'Neill play, and I have finally been able to put together this project I have been working on for three years. I think this is the greatest American play." In a 1990 Goodman production of the play also helmed by Falls, Dennehy played the part of Hickey. The role has been played on Broadway by such actors as Jason Robards, James Earl Jones and Kevin Spacey, as well as Lee Marvin in a 1973 film adaptation.

Saying he’s ready for “a healthy vacation from the Broadway theater scene," Lane told the paper that he has been wanting to take his first crack at a major O'Neill role, and ideally work with both Falls and longtime friend Dennehy. "I ...

What's Up, Marla Maples? The Love, Loss and What I Wore Star on Returning to New York and Sending Daughter Tiffany Trump to College

Marla Maples may be best known as the ex-wife of celebrity businessman Donald Trump, but she is also a Broadway vet, having appeared in the hit musical The Will Rogers Follies. Broadway.com recently caught up with the Georgia native to chat about her return to the theater, her budding music career and her soon-to-be life as an empty-nester as Tiffany preps for college.

Welcome back to the New York stage. How’s the show going?
I’m loving it so much. It’s just like heaven being back in the Broadway community. I’ve missed it so much.

Did you have any fashion memories of your own to contribute to the show?

A visit to the nostalgic home of the less than artful Dodgers

Dodger Stadium is about the only thing the Los Angeles Dodgers have going for them by Kevin Warwick As the all-star game hubbub passes and the baseball season starts its second run, Los Angeles Dodgers fans can proudly raise a pair of middle fingers to the whining, woe-is-me bullshit of Cubs and Sox fans, because the Dodgers only have two things going for them now: Matt Kemp, who is just killing it, and Dodger Stadium. When I visited southern California a couple weeks ago, one of my few checklist items besides lollygagging around berwealthy beach towns and stuffing my face with self-serve frozen yogurt was to take in a Dodgers game.?
