Authorities have charged a Kenwood man with masquerading as a Chicago police officer to gain access to a Northwest Side high school last month and stealing the principal's briefcase full of personal electronics, authorities said.
Clarence George, of 4700 block of South Ellis Avenue, was charged with burglary to a school and aggravated felony impersonation of a police officer for the Dec. 17 theft at Foreman High School, police said.
He's expected to appear in Central Bond Court Wednesday morning, police said.
Police said George went to the school at 3235 N. Leclaire Ave., claiming to be an officer assigned to the Austin police district, police spokesman Daryl Baety said.
After going to the principal's office, police said George stole a briefcase containing a laptop computer, a digital camera, iPod and a thumb drive, Baety said.
Police didn't say how they tracked down George, or whether he showed any sort of fraudulent identification to school officials. School officials positively identified George as the thief, Baety said.
Police recovered the laptop computer.
The theft took place a day after more than a dozen students were arrested and a police officer hospitalized after a fight broke out inside the school.
A spokeswoman for Chicago Public Schools wouldn't discuss details of the theft, but said school officials planned to review safety and security protocols.
