Officers were involved in two separate shootings Tuesday night that took place within minutes of each other and left three suspects wounded on the city's West and South Sides.
The first shooting occurred at about 9:35 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Roosevelt Road in the city's Lawndale neighborhood, according to police and the Independent Police Review Authority.
Police said Mobile Strike Force officers were on a mission when they obtained a description of a vehicle that was transporting narcotics and weapons. The officers saw a vehicle matching the description in the 4300 block of West Roosevelt and pulled that vehicle over, police said.
But the driver put the vehicle in reverse and struck a squad car. He then accelerated forward and struck an officer, police said. Another passenger in the car pointed a handgun at the officers, and an officer fired his weapon, striking both passengers, police said.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis said Tuesday night both suspects were taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. But police said this morning that the suspects suffered non-life threatening injures and were expected to be treated and released from the hospital.
In an apparently unrelated shooting about five minutes later on the South Side, police wounded a man on the 4200 block of South Calumet Avenue.
Wentworth Area Tactical officers were on patrol when they tried to question two males, police said. Both suspects fled on foot. As an officer entered an alley in pursuit, one of the suspects pointed a weapon at him and the officer shot him, police said.
The wounded suspect was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County where he was listed in good condition, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
Weapons were recovered at both scenes. There were no officers injured in either incident.
Both shootings were being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
