A 25-year-old man was killed this morning in a collision of the car he was riding in and a police car on the South Side.
Two police officers and two others were also hurt in the crash at the intersection of 69th Street and Indiana Avenue.
The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the dead man as Shawn Garrett, 25, of the 6300 block of South Normal Avenue. He was a passenger in the car.
The crash happened about 2 a.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. Preliminary reports said a vehicle ran a red light and crashed into the squad car. The vehicle then crashed into a pole, Greer said.
Information provided the Cook County medical examiner's office, however, indicated the squad car crashed into the other vehicle.
Preliminary reports said two officers were injured and taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
The man who died was declared dead at Stroger Hospital at 2:49 a.m. His companions were critically injured and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Greer said.
