A mother and her adult son were found dead Monday in Bloomingdale in what police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide.
Autopsies will be conducted Tuesday on Marjorie Schultz, 88, and her son William, 58, but authorities said it appears the two died of an overdose of prescription pills.
Another son of the woman called police to her town house in the 100 block of Springbrook Drive just after noon Monday. Bloomingdale police Chief Frank Giammarese described the crime as domestic and said police are not looking for other suspects. Neither son lived at the town house.
Several law enforcement sources said William Schultz left a suicide note and various financial records on a table inside his mother's home.
The town house, which was cordoned off with yellow police tape Monday afternoon, is in a subdivision just south of the Springbrook Shopping Center.
Several neighbors who did not want to be named said Marjorie Schultz had a live-in caregiver after the elderly woman suffered a debilitating stroke more than a year ago that left her in a wheelchair. They said William Schultz, who lived in Carol Stream, would stay with his mother when the caregiver was off. Marjorie Schultz's husband died several years ago, according to the neighbors, who recalled how she often participated in Bloomingdale Township senior activities before her stroke.
"You never want something like this to happen, but thank God it wasn't random," said Jeff Silverman, another neighbor. "It's really nerve-racking."
Bloomingdale was the site of another murder this month. A 4-year-old girl was found with her throat slashed in what authorities called a murder-attempted suicide. The child's mother, Marci Webber, 43, is charged with first-degree murder.
