Man dies from carbon monoxide poisoning

A man died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a building in which gas had been improperly restored, according to police.

About 7:15 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a building in the 7900 block of South Merrill Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood for carbon monoxide poisoning, according to police. Officials found a man who had been asphyxiated by the gas, police said.

Leroy Charles, 45, died at home, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Records showed that gas to that building had been shut off in 2009, according to Bonnie Johnson, a spokeswoman with People's Gas.

It was not immediately known how the gas had been restored, but it had been done so improperly, police said.
