The trial of the woman charged with killing the girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle and their unborn child, which had been scheduled for Jan. 10, has been pushed back until the end of February.
Lake County Circuit Judge Christopher Stride approved a motion by attorneys for Marni Yang this afternoon to continue the trial, which has now been scheduled to begin on Feb. 28. Stride estimates that the trial could take up to three weeks.
In making his ruling, over the objection of the prosecution, Stride said that he wanted everyone involved in the case to have enough time to go through the voluminous amounts of evidence.
"We are knocking on the door of 10 or 11,000 pages of discovery, which is an awful lot to sort through," he said. "Both the defense and the prosecution have been diligent and acted in a manner that is competent and professional. No one has dragged their feet."
Yang is accused of fatally shooting Rhoni Reuter, 42, in Reuter's Deerfield condominium, killing her and her unborn child on Oct. 4, 2007.
Prosecutors have alleged that Yang, now 42, was jealous of Reuter for being pregnant with Gayle's child and had a history of harassment with romantic rivals.
