Kidnapping suspect also charged with murder

One of the men charged in the kidnapping of a man later found dead in a garage has now been charged with murder, police said.

Darnell Stokes, 38, of Justice was charged this morning with one count of murder in the death of Francisco Favela, according to Police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines.

Stokes, along with Keith Watts, 34, of Chicago, were charged Tuesday with aggravated kidnapping and unlawful restraint, police said. Watts also was charged Tuesday with unlawful use of a weapon.

Favela was kidnapped at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday from a home near Cermak Road and South Keeler Avenue, police said. He had been rehabbing the building when he was abducted and his red Chevrolet Blazer stolen, police said.

Police said the kidnappers pretended they wanted to rent building. A source said a second victim was able to escape.

Favela was found dead about 9 p.m. Monday inside a vehicle in a garage on the 1100 block of North Springfield Avenue, according to police. He died from blunt head trauma and stab wounds, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.
