On December 17, the cast and creative team of Manhattan Theatre Club’s The Whipping Man braved the winter cold to step out for a meet and greet. Doug Hughes directs the New York premiere of Matthew Lopez’s play, set in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. A Jewish Confederate soldier returns wounded from the battlefield to find his family home in ruins, abandoned by everyone except two former slaves who were raised as Jews in the his home. As the three men reunite to observe Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets, plus ties that bind them together and, ultimately, might cost each man his freedom.
