Person jumps in river downtown

A person jumped into the Chicago River downtown in an apparent suicide attempt this afternoon, officials said.

The person apparently tried to commit suicide by jumping into the river near Dearborn Street and Wacker Drive just after 2:50 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety.

A Chicago Fire Department helicopter responded within eight minutes of the call and saw the elderly man near the middle of the river just east of the Dearborn Street bridge, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Kevin MacGregor.

Two divers jumped into the water from the helicopter and managed to get the man out of the water and transferred him to a nearby ambulance, said MacGregor.

The man was in extremely critical condition and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was being treated, MacGregor said.
